Comments on Philippians

Verse 6 “And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.”

Paul has a certainty about the work of God. The Greek verb tense suggests that he has had and still has this confidence in what God is doing in the Philippian church and by extension all the churches. The members of the church in Philippi and thus the church itself were filled with the Holy Spirit. The Spirit was at work maturing the church to bring it to the expected fulfilment of maturity (Eph. 4:11-16).

The expression “day of Christ” occurs six times in the New Testament. Three of them occur in the letter to the Philippians. This phrase occurs in the sense of Jesus’ return to take the church home with him. His return in this case is about salvation and a heavenly home. The expression “day of the Lord” carries the thought of judgment. We look forward to the day of Christ.

Christians are being transformed daily through the work of the Holy Spirit and this transformation is preparing them for the coming of Christ. They will be prepared for a new body in a new heaven and a new earth.

Task for Today: Yield to the Spirit. Allow the Spirit to work transformation in you. Read and meditate on His words. Follow where He leads and do not be led by the evil one into darkness and stagnation. Meditation, prayer, fellowship with the saints, deeds of service and walking in the light will allow Him to transform you into the holy one God wants you to be.
